Description

The Storm of ’28 - 91st Anniversary Memorial Event

Event Details

The Storm of ’28 Memorial Park Coalition, Inc. will commemorate the 91st Anniversary Celebration of the great hurricane of 1928 with a service of remembrance, generously supported by the City of West Palm Beach Community Redevelopment Agency. This event will memorialize the nearly 3,000 men, women, children, who lost their lives during the deadliest hurricane in Florida’s history.

These victims were buried in mass graves near Lake Okeechobee. The rest were brought by the truckful to West Palm Beach at 25th Street and Tamarind Avenue. For over ten years, Robert Hazard and his non-profit, Storm of ’28 Coalition, fought to gain recognition for the six hundred and seventy-four mostly black victims that were stacked into a mass gravesite without a proper burial in West Palm Beach.

The service will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2019, at 3:00 pm, at the Mass Grave & Paupers Cemetery site, on 25th Street and Tamarind Avenue in West Palm Beach, FL. Attendees will enjoy drum call and libation by Abasi Hanif, live performances by Palm Beach’s hottest Digital Vibez Dance Crew and Sasa African Dance Theater, and complimentary food and drinks. This event is free and open to the public. No pre-registration is required.

The event aims to bring together individuals of all religions, cultures and walks of life to build awareness of the mass gravesite, but also facilitate a spirit of holistic devotion and unity.
