This session presents developmental and consequential sexuality issues linked with substance abuse and addiction, many of which have been historically neglected both in treatment and recovery. Addiction will be characterized in stages and sexuality issues are identified in each. Also included will be an overview of the effects the major “drugs of abuse,” identifying considerations for treatment, recovery, and relapse prevention.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

Identify some sexuality issues typically seen in all phases of chemical dependency, as well as the often-neglected concerns which can effectively couple these disciplines.
Incorporate strategies for more effective recovery and relapse prevention in chemical dependency by better addressing sexuality and sexual health issues.
Our Presenter:

Richard M. Siegel, PhD. LMHC, CST, is a Florida-licensed mental health counselor and 491-Board certified sex therapist, certified by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors & Therapists (AASECT) as a sex therapist and a sex therapy supervisor, and is a clinical member of the Society for Sex Therapy and Research (SSTAR).

Currently the Director of Modern Sex Therapy Institutes, Dr. Siegel also maintains a sex therapy and counseling practice in Boca Raton at Helping Moon Counseling, working with individuals and couples across the lifespan, dealing with a wide range of sexuality and mental health issues.

Dr. Siegel completed his doctoral dissertation research on the presentation topic at the American Academy of Clinical Sexologists, and will share some of his findings. He is a member of AMHCA and FMHCA, a Florida Qualified Supervisor for Mental Health Counselor Interns, and is adjunct faculty at Palm Beach State College, in the Dept. of Health Science, teaching Sexuality Education and Drug Education health electives.
